Welcome to the opening of our summer exhibition at Bryggens Museum “Across the West Toward the North” – American and Norwegian landscape photography, Saturday 20th May at 12:00.

The exhibition, created by the University Library in Bergen and the Schmucker Art Gallery at Gettysburg College, in collaboration with Bymuseet i Bergen, displays more than 120 original 19th-century photographs and other unique objects from an American and several Norwegian collections.

This is the first time that similarities and differences in early Norwegian and American landscape photography have been the main theme of an exhibition.

On Saturday the 20th May, the exhibition curators Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad and Shannon Egan and the collector Ron Perisho, the owner of the American photos, will talk about various topics related to the exhibition in 2 lectures.

12:00-12:40: The Prospects of Across the West and Toward the North by Marthe Tolnes Fjellestad and Shannon Egan.

Ever since the invention of the camera, photographers have attempted to capture and preserve landscapes as images.

Towards the end of the 19th century, technological advances made it possible to depict magnificent nature in completely new ways.

From west to north: Norwegian and American landscape photography looks at a historic moment when landscapes on both sides of the Atlantic were mapped, photographed and tamed for the first time.

This is the first time that an exhibition has as its main theme similarities and differences in early Norwegian and American landscape photography.

The exhibition contains more than 120 original 19th century photographs and unique objects drawn from three historic collections.
