Guided tour: Ragna Breivik. Åsmund Frægdagjeva and a Life at the Loom

EXHIBITION
GUIDED TOURS

Get to know the teacher, traditional craftswoman, and artist Ragna Breivik

Ragna Breivik is often associated with Gerhard Munthe and the tapestry series Åsmund Frægdagjeva. These ten beautiful pictorial tapestries were what truly made her name in national and international textile art, and they bear witness to her knowledge, skill, and perseverance. However, Breivik’s life and work encompassed much more than just medieval ballads.

In this guided tour, you will get to know Ragna Breivik and her work better. We follow her childhood by Fanafjorden, where she learned to card, spin, dye, and weave, her work as a teacher, and her years in the United States, where she developed more than 6,000 colour shades. Special attention is given to Breivik’s continued work as an artist – through ups and downs, and in the tension between ancient Norwegian craft traditions and modern art.

After the guided tour, you are welcome to explore the exhibition on your own.

Duration 50 minutes.
