The Children’s Bymuseet – Fun for the whole family.

Tips for family fun:

  • Bryggens Museum: Free activity booklet with a quiz and drawing competition
  • Håkon’s Hall: Free outdoor activity trail at Bergenhus Fortress, and a lovely area for outdoor games and picnics.
  • Rosenkrantz Tower: Climb all the way from the dungeon in the cellar to the cannon tower at the top.
  • Old Bergen: Greet the ducks and experience the atmosphere of a living museum, bringing to life the era when your great-grandparents were children. Enjoy a beautiful outdoor area with opportunities to swim at Elsesro or the Sandviken Sea Bath.
  • Hordamuseet: Have a picnic (no open flames) in the open-air museum, or visit the nearby beach at Melkeviken bathing spot.
  • Theatrical Walks: Experience what life was like when your great-grandparents were young. Elle-Melle-Byen-Fortelle is a playful theatrical walk through children’s Bergen, told with theatre, games, and fun. Join in and play Kattepinn, Kokeliko, Tikken, and other familiar and lesser-known games.

Everyday Enrichment: Educational experiences for adults.

  • Bryggens Museum: See the excavations at Bryggen and take a guided tour of the rune finds.
  • Theatrical Walks for Adults: All theatrical walks (except the family walk Elle-Melle-Byen-Fortelle) are designed for adults. They present Bergen’s history from a new, entertaining, and thought-provoking perspective, often narrated by those who traditionally didn’t get to define history in books.
  • Expert Walks: Based on the City Museum’s historical research, these tours provide in-depth insights into Bergen’s history, from medieval shoemakers to individuals’ journeys to being burned at the stake for witchcraft, as well as exploring often-overlooked parts of the city. You’re guaranteed to learn something new!
  • Hordamuseet: Explore a fascinating collection of traditional coastal boats without engines, with guided tours available. There are also periodic displays of archaeological finds, and the clustered farmstead offers guided tours showcasing rural life.
  • Damsgård Manor House: A beautiful, typical pleasure garden from the 1780s, with the main building being a masterpiece of Norwegian Rococo wooden architecture. Guided tours are available both inside the house and in the garden.
  • The Leprosy Museum: A powerful and fascinating account of the history of leprosy. The museum also features a historical herb garden with medicinal plants that were used to treat leprosy before the leprosy bacillus was discovered.
