Step into the Historic Heart of Bergen – the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bryggen.

Discover Bergen’s history at Bryggen, the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site and historic trading centre. On this guided walking tour, you’ll explore how Bergen developed from a Medieval trading port into Norway’s most important city, shaped by international trade, fire, and rebuilding over the centuries.

The tour begins at Bryggens Museum, home to the world’s largest collection of Medieval rune sticks, discovered during archaeological excavations in the 1950s and 1960s. These carved messages—ranging from business correspondence to personal notes—offer a rare insight into everyday life in Medieval Bergen. Along with artefacts such as pottery, tools, andgaming pieces, they reveal Bergen’s key role in connecting Norway to the rest of Europe.

We then step outside to walk past St Mary’s Church, Bergen’s oldest surviving building, and explore its surrounding Medieval ruins, before we continue into Schøtstuene—the Hanseatic assembly rooms. There you’ll discover how the Hanseatic League, a powerful network of German merchants, transformed Bergen into a major trading port and left a lasting cultural and economic legacy.

The walk continues between Bryggen’s iconic wooden buildings, rebuilt after the great fire of 1702 and now among Bergen’s most recognisable landmarks. You’ll also visit the remains of the city’s Medieval wine cellar, once part of the town hall and an important social and commercial meeting place in the Middle Ages.

This walking tour is an excellent way to experience and learn about Bergen’s rich heritage. Don’t forget to bring your walking shoes and curiosity, as this tour is sure to captivate those with an interest in history and culture.
